一杯

Ca va etre un long poste, accrochez vous !

From here some people might understand,

This is gonna be a long post (you already had to scroll all the way here for the english !).

1. Saturday : I tough I could go visit the apartment I could visit, but Friday I learned that the current tennants are moving Saturday, so I could only go Sunday. So at this point I didn't had anything to do Saturday, but then I remembered that we were past the 1st of March and that probably I could go check the camera I was waiting for (SP-550uz). This led to me spending the after-noon in Akihabara. I did find the camera ! It was not as great as I tough it would be though. The quality was ok-ish and beside the 18x optical zoom, the other features where not that great. So I jumped on my second choice ! The Finepix S9100 from Fujifilm. A camera the size of mount Fuji with some characteristics I have never seen on a point-and-shoot before (rapid focus, zoom and manual focus on the lens, etc). It's a cross between a traditionnal camera and a semi-pro thingy. She is not a Single Lens Reflex (no mirror) so she can work with an LCD and take movies and yet, she has these neat features mentionned earlier. And finally, Saturday night, I went out with my roomate which is really usefull for discovering places in Tokyo and meeting people. I also got a nice picture of him, but I'm not sure I can post it because I don't want to move out of the apartment before it's time...

2. Sunday : At 9:30 I met the agent (same as always) to go visit the apartment. But when he arrived it was to tell me the people living there were STILL moving, so I could only go in the afternoon. However, I had things planned in the afternoon so I postponned it to Monday. Indeed, as the sun reached high orbit, I went to meet for the second time the girl I had met through japan-guide (mentionned in an earlier post). We went to Shinjuku were I bought a cook book with the interesting particularity of being writen in both english AND japanese. This should allow me to find the ingredients I need in a japanese supermarket while at the same time understand how to cook them ! This book also means I now have more cook book than I the number of time I have actually cooked food...).

3. Monday : YYYYYYES ! I visited the apartment located in Kameari. It was, as I expected, really nice. The bathroom is a little small, but I don't really mind, I'm not planning to spend a lot of time here. In fact, the most important room, the living room, is quite big and will be very nice I think. There is even 2 aircon (one in each room) ! So, god willing, this apartment will be mine, hopefully, this time I will see the end of it.

Of course, now I have many pictures to show you (or I will very very soon). However, up until now, I kept the small pictures on my computer back in Quebec. Considering the size of the picture I will now produce, I don't think that will be a good alternative in the long run. So I'm going to register to one form or the other of online photo album. I don't know when tough, I need to do some research and time to setup all this. I'll keep you posted of course !

So, good day to you, I shall now go rest my eyes for a while.

I'm already taking vacations ?

Tune in for english

At least the agency tried. Monday they faxed a bunch of appartement papers about apartment all around Tokyo. I looked at them all and decided I wanted to visit 3 or 4 of them. At first I was thinking of going after work around 6pm. But apparently I can only visit apartment between 9h30 and 3pm. So I took a half-day off on my ~huuuge~ 2 weeks of paid vacation to go visit apartments.

It didn't go that well. First of all, on the 4 apartments I was keen to investigate, 2 where already gone. But that's not so bad, it was two of the less interesting one. But the one I really wanted to see was still ocupied so I could not go inside ! They plan to leave on March 3rd, so I have to wait till then to visit the appartment. I still went to the place to see the outside and go around the neighborhood. It's a really amazing neighborhood. This apartment is located on the top of a supermarket ! Not only that, it's also conviently located across the street from the train station. And on the other side of this station there seems to be a huge shopping mall. Hard to do any better I think. It's a bit outside of Tokyo but the train line goes directly to my work place, so I wouldn't have to take any transfer ! The sketch of the apartment tells me it's about as big as the one I was suppose to get in Saitama (around 40 square meters). If I can only get in for a quick look, there's a 99% chance I'll take this apartment. It's also a little cheaper than the Saitama one : 96 500\ (965$/month). Of course, this supposes that they are willing to rent to a gaijin and that the apartment will still be free after the 3rd.

While I was there, I also went to some other apartments, but they were farter from the station and honnestly I did not feel like walking 10min and than taking a 20min train ride to get to work everyday !

I was also able to hold what I consider something closely resembling a conversation with the japanese-only speaking agent, so I'm pretty proud of myself ! (learned a new word : too far (遠過ぎる).)

So now I'll wait till the 3rd to check out the apartment. Something tells me there might be another post on this blog around this date.

I have been hit by the curse !

English shall begin herein

You know all these posts about me finding an apartment ? It seems I'm not the only one to have found something. It seems the owner of the apartment also found out I was a gaijin (stranger) and now he doesn't want me in his apartment ! It's really too bad, the place was really nice and all the paperwork had already been completed ! I can't believe the owner is willing to go through all the process of finding another tenant just because I'm a stranger.

Since it is partly the fault of the real estate agent for not checking correctly, they are willing to search very hard to find another place that I would deem "suitable". But are they really going to find something to my liking ? I don't know.

The worst part is that the guy with whom I'm staying is supposed to leave Japan at the beginning of April (and I was supposed to buy some of his stuff to furnish my apartment). But now there is no guarantee I will have an apartment by the end of March ! This is getting more and more complex !

That's mostly what I wanted to post. I've decided to wait till the begining of March to check out the new Olympus camera, so I won't buy one right right now.

以上です (that is all)

What the heck ?

Ceci m'a amene a regarder d'autres cameras. Presentement je regarde beaucoup les :
  • Panasonic Lumix FZ50
  • Fujifilm S9100

You know the drill...

Oops, 7 days without an update, I'm going to lose my readers (reader ?) ! Don't worry, it's not that I don't want to write anything, just that I don't really know what to talk about. I am Still waiting for March to get inside my appartment, still searching for the perfect camera and I did not have any "incredible-must-tell" encounter.

I did, in fact, meet someone this weekend. We spent most of the afternoon practicing her english I guess. She was really a nice person, I hope I'll be able to meet her again. She's one of the many persons to have contacted me trough japan-guide.com.

Truth is, even tough I still haven't bough any camera, my knowledge in the field is evergrowing. At first I was thinking of purchasing a Nikon D40 double-lens kit. But professional (or semi-pro) cameras lack some features I am quite fond of. Of course, the quality on these things is out of this world, but the lack of a usable LCD screen and the absence of a movie mode are, in my opinion, big trade-off. Also, the D40 uses battery pack instead of normal AA batteries. Let's just say that if I plan a hicking trip around fuji, the power outlets to recharge the batteries might be a bit sparse. Since all this comes at double the price of any casual point-and-shoot, I'm kinda looking toward the later. Right now, I'm looking at :
  • Panasonic Lumix FZ50
  • Fujifilm S9100
  • and the Olympus SP-550 (which however won't be out till March...)
These things are still pricey, but all those have unfathomable optical zoom, skyrocketing megapixels and an heavy amount of features. Add to that an ISO that goes at least to 1600 (ok, at that level the quality is unmanagable, they're still not 35mm cameras). I think these are pretty interesting.

So that's pretty much it, hope it's not to bad considering I had nothing to say ?
