Le bloc ou j'habite (je suis au premier etage). My apartment, I'm on the first floor.


La cuisine/salle a manger. Mon appartement est un 1DK (C'est la facon de decrire les appartements au Japon). The DK (Dining room/Kitchen) of the 1DK (this is how you describe appartment in Japan).


La douche. Style japonais. The shower. Japanese style.


La cuisine proprement dite, j'aime bien la facon que c'est fait, je crois que ca va etre assez pratique. The kitchen itself. I like the way it's positioned, I think it is going to be practical.


Le "1" dans "1DK". Ca va me servir de chambre et probablement de bureau. C'est une pas mal grande piece considerant les standards Japonais. The "1" in "1DK". This is what I use as bedroom and probably living room.


Et pour ceux qui se demande si j'ai la toilette classique japonaise. Non, en voici la preuve. Oui le truc sur le dessus se veut un lavabo pour se laver les mains. For those who might wonder if I have the Classic japanese style toilet. Wonder no more ! it is a perfectly normal toilet. Yes the thing on top is supposed to be a lavatory to wash your hand when you flush.


Alors voila un bon exemple de ce que 1 000$ par mois peut vous achetez au Japon. C'est actuellement un assez bel appartement. Mais comme c'est aussi mon premier, j'imagine que je vais voir a l'usage ce qui me parait desagreable et ce qui m'est effectivement agreable.

So this is a good exemple of what 1000$ per month can buy you in Japan. It is in fact supposed to be a fairly good deal. But it is also my very first apartment so I guess after a while I will begin to see what is displeasing and what really is essential in an apartment.

Bonjour lecteur et lectrice, comment allez-vous aujourd'hui ? Pour ma pars les choses semblent avoir repris le droit chemin puisque : J'AI　UN　APPART ! Et oui, hier j'ai officiellement demenage dans mon nouvel appartement. C'etait une tres belle journee hier et il faisait assez chaud pour etre dehors sans manteau, ce qui a rendu le demenagement assez plaisant.

Comme j'herite de tout ce que mon coloc n'a pas reussit a vendre, il y avait pas mal plus de stock que ce que j'avais prevu. Et pour ceux et celles qui s'inquiete : non, je ne suis pas mort, inutile d'appeler mes amis, le bureau ou mon cellulaire. J'etait juste O-C-C-U-P-E ! Mettons les choses au clair : Mon coloc n'a plus d'appart, je n'ai pas encore internet a mon nouvel appart et hier je n'etait pas au bureau vu que je demenageais ! Alors comment j'aurais pu donner des nouvelles ??? merci. (cette partie du blog ne s'adressait pas a tout le monde...)

Le demenagement s'est a peu pres passe comme suit :

• Lever a 7h du matin. A ce moment j'ai ramasse les quelques trucs qui trainaient dans l'appartement de mon coloc et qui n'etait pas dans mes valises. Puis j'ai ete vide mes valises a mon nouvel appartement et j'ai pris des photos pour eventuellement, quand je vais quitter, pouvoir recuperer mon depot !


• A 11h, le type que mon coloc connait et qui a un petit camion est arrive pour le demenagement en tant que tel. Ca a pris 3 voyages pour tout amener et 3h. On s'etait entendu pour 10 000Yen (soit environs 100$) pour le demenagement. Ca revient a un peu plus que 30$ de l'heure pour la location du camion (et les bras du gars), je crois que ca valait la peine.


• Diner vers 3h pm, puis j'ai ete au bureau pour demander a quelqu'un d'appeler pour faire activer eau, electricite et gaz. J'avais aussi prevu de faire 3 ou 4 heures de boulot juste pour dire que je ne prenais pas completement une journee de conge. Mais il semble que pour l'activation du gaz il fallait que je sois chez nous. Alors je suis retourne presto a mon nouvel appart pour attendre le gars du gaz (vers 18h30). Apres ca je me suis dit que j'etait mieux de ranger mon appartement plutot que de retourner au bureau.

Bref, j'ai encore beaucoup de truc que mon coloc m'a shippe que je ne sais pas trop ce que je vais faire avec. Je n'ai pas encore place les trucs dans la cuisine et je n'ai pas le fils pour telecharger les photos de mon appart pour l'instant (je suis au bureau et j'ai laisse le fil de la camera chez nous). Mais ma machine a laver fonctionne, la douche aussi, le lit est installe, la television capte les postes de base, j'ai une bibliotheque pas trop pire et la table dans la cuisine est monte !

Ah ! et aller a la job en velo me prend entre 20 et 25min, ce qui est tres bien ! Aussi, hier soir pour souper j'ai pris le temps de me promener un peu (je n'avais pas beaucoup visite le quartier). J'ai une immense epicerie au sous-sol d'un magasin ou ils vendent de tout (le premier etage est un magasin de vetement grand comme un Winners et au deuxieme etage, tout pour la maison, des ustensils de cuisine aux climatiseurs en passant par les articles de toilette !) Plusieurs restaurants aussi autour de la station de train et quelques pachinko (l'equivalent legal d'un casino au Japon). Je vais essayer de prendre des photos de tout cela bientot !

A la fin de la journee hier j'etait royalement claque par contre, en plus avant-hier je m'etais coucher assez tard (on parle ici d'environ 2h du matin (moi et mon coloc on a jase un peu trop tard), et je me suis lever a 7h !). Maintenant il faut que je finisse de regler les papiers (il manque une signature de Ubit) et pour transferer les factures d'eau et d'electricite il me fallait un numero de client que je n'avais pas apporte avec moi hier quand la personne au bureau a telephone.

Ensuite c'est le long processus de s'installer confortablement, il me manque un rice-cooker et un four / four a micro-onde / grille-pain (il y a des fours au japon qui font tout-en-un).

Good Morning ladies and gentlemen. How are you today ? For me things seems to be back on track since I now officially reside : IN MY NEW APARTMENT ! That's right, yesterday I moved to my new apartment. It was a very nice day and hot enough to go out without a coat, so quite perfect for moving stuff.

Since I inherited anything my roommate couldn't get rid of, I ended up moving much more stuff than I originally expected. I am doing well.

The move went down like this :

• I woke up at 7. At this moment I gathered any stuff that wasn't already in my luggage and I brough my trunk to my new apartment. There I took some picture in the hope that someday it will help me get back my deposit !


• At around 11h, a guy my roommate knows and who has a small van came to help us with the moving of the bigger stuff. It took 3 trips back and forth and 3h. For this, we had already agreed on a paiement of 10 000Yen (so about 100$). This makes a little more than 30$ per hour for the renting of the van (and the arms of the guy). So I think it was a good deal.


• Then it was lunch at around 3pm, then I went to Ubit to ask someone that can speak japanese to help me with activating water, electricity and gas. I was hoping to do maybe 3 or 4 hours of work also so that my day wasn't a vacation. Sadly, after maybe 2h I had to go back because I needed to be there for the gas company to activate the gas (They came at about 18h30). After that I decided to stay at my apartment and organize my stuff instead of trying to go back to work.

So in the end, I have many things from my roommate and no idea what I'm going to do with it all. I still have to organize the stuff in the kitchen and I today I forgot to bring the cable for the camera at work, so I can't show you pictures of my apartment. BUT, my washing machine is installed and working, the shower has hot water, the bed is installed, the television works, I have a small bookcase and the kitchen table is assembled !

Oh, and going to work by bicycle takes about 20 or 25min, which is perfect ! Also, yesterday while looking for diner I took the time to look around my new neighborhood (I hadn't look around that much). I have a huge supermarket on the basement of a huge store where they sell everything ! (first floor is a clothing shop the size of Winners and the second floor is everything for the house, from kitchenware to aircon and bathroom stuff.) Many restaurants and pachinko also populate the train station's neighborhood. I'll try taking pictures soon !

At the end of the day I was completly wasted. The night before I had only about 5h of sleep too (talked too much with my roomate and woke up way to early). Today I have to finish some paperwork (I'm missing a signature from Ubit) and for electricity and water I needed a client number that I didn't bring with me yesterday when I came to work.

Then the somewhat long process of getting confortable in my new place. I probably need a rice-cooker and the marvelous oven/microwave/toaster-all-in-one thingy. But I need money for that, so I might wait a little. First month rent is a b**** in japan.

しゃぶしゃぶ

Apres mon poste un peu enrage de vendredi, voici quelque chose d'un peu plus léger (et des nouvelles de l'element enrageant).

Jeudi passe je suis alle manger du Shabu-Shabu (il s'agit d'ailleurs du titre de ce poste) avec une amie a Shinjuku. C'etait un "all you can eat" alors nous avons mange a s'en faire exploser la panse.

Le shabu-shabu est generalement compare a la fondue chinoise mais version japonaise (donc logiquement : fondue japonaise). Les tranches de viande sont d'une minceur inimaginable et la quantite de legumes disponibles est impressionnante. Bref ce fut un veritable festin !

J'ai (pour la quatrieme fois) applique pour un appartement. Cette fois-ci l'appartement est tout juste a cote de la station Sugamo (a peut-etre 30min de bicyclette du travail). Si tout se passe bien je devrais avoir la confirmation definitive demain. Il s'agit d'un endroit suggere par le fudousan qui se specialise dans les etrangers, alors je crois que mes chances sont bonnes cette fois ! (ouais bon, je me suis dit ca les 4 fois...)

After my somewhat iritated post of Friday, here's something a little less biased (and news from the iritating element).

Last Thursday I went to eat Shabu-Shabu (which also happen to be the title of this post) with a friend in Shinjuku. It was a "all you can eat" so we ate till we were about to explode.

Shabu-Shabu somewhat like "chinese fondue" but in a japanese style (so logically it's a japanese fondue). The meat slices were unimaginably thin and there were all sort of legumes, it was really impressive (and tasty).

I have (for the fourth time) applied for an apartment. This time, the place is close to Sugamo station. If everything goes well I should have the confirmation tomorrow. It is a place suggested by the fudousan that specialise in foreigners so I think my chances are good now ! (I did however though that the last 3 times...)

There was also a party thrown at work for the completion of a contract and we all gathered in a japanese bar (called izakaya, much better than bars in Canada !). So I took some picture from my work colleagues. (again, see the pictures in the french section, I'm not foolish enough to post them twice... come on ! scroll a little !!)

J'imagine que pour la plupart des gens ca fait longtemps que je n'ai pas fait de nouveau poste (8 jours !), mais je dois dire que je cours tellement en rond de ces temps-ci que je ne suis meme pas sur de quoi je devrais parle.

Commencons par les politesses d'usage dans le but d'adoucir mon propos. Cela fait presque deux mois que je suis au Japon et je dois dire que de facon generale c'est une tres bonne experience. Les gens sont sympatique, le travail egalement et j'ai encore plein de choses a faire et a voir. En plus, les cerisiers commencent a fleurir !

Maintenant, en ce qui concerne les appartements : Le Japon est une arnaque ! Je hais tous les foutus proprietaires d'appartement au Japon et leurs satane agence immobiliere ! voila !

Je m'explique. Vous n'etes pas sans savoir que mon coloc actuel retourne au Quebec d'ici peu, la date officielle etant le 29 mars. A cette date, si je n'ai pas encore d'appartement je vais devoir retourner a un hotel ou quelque chose. Mais voila que cette semaine UBit m'a egalement fait savoir que si je voulais qu'ils payent le premier mois de loyer pour moi, et malgre le fait qu'il ne s'agisse que d'un pret, il faudrait que ce soit avant le mois prochain (pourquoi ? je ne sais pas...). Bref, il devient urgent que je me trouve un appartement, et ce, d'ici la fin du mois.

J'ai donc pris sur moi de partir a la chasse aux appartements en apres-midi toute la semaine et de revenir travailler jusqu'a tard le soir, encore convaincu que je trouverais d'ici mardi ou mercredi. Malheureusement, ce ne fut pas le cas. Laissez-moi vous presenter le deroulement habituel d'une visite a un fudousan :
1. Presentation sommaire de ce que je recherche (quelque chose de plus grand qu'une boite a pain).
2. L'agent sort plusieurs cartables d'appartements.
3. Je passe 30min a selectionner les appartements qui me semble un peu interessant. En general a la fin du/des cartable(s) cela represente une vingtaine d'appartements.
4. L'agent passe les 30 prochaines minutes a appeler les proprietaires des appartements selectionnes pour savoir si la presence d'un etranger les importunes.
5. L'agent revient avec 2 ou 3 appartements possibles.

Maintenant, pour vous donnez une meilleure idee. Si vous preniez les 20 appartements selectionnes au debut et que vous les mettiez en ordre d'interet (tous etant relativement interessant, mais certains etant bien sur nettement plus interessant). Devinez ceux que l'agent ramene apres ses coups de fils ? Je vous le donne en mille : ceux du fond. C'est immanquable.

Hier j'ai ete a un fudousan qui se presente comme etant specialise dans la recherche d'appartement pour etranger. L'apres-midi n'a pas donne grand chose, mais l'agente de l'endroit m'a promis de me faxer plusieurs appartement d'ici dimanche. Pendant ce temps, je vais surement chercher ailleurs samedi et dimanche, mais je crois que mes chances sont bonne avec le fudousan de vendredi. A tout le moins, je le souhaite de tout coeur.

Et pour ceux qui croit que c'est injuste, malheureusement, j'ai verifie sur internet, le Japon ne possede aucune loi contre la discrimination. Le seul element en ma faveur est que le Japon fait parti des Nations-Unis et que celon une clause des Nations-Unis il faut que les pays qui en font partie aient des lois contre la discrimination. Visiblement les Nations-Unis n'ont pas fait beaucoup de verification quand ils ont laisse le Japon signer le traite.

Ok, I didn't had time for english before so I just posted in french. Today I have a bit more time, so let's do the translation.

First let's present the good so that the bad won't look so bad. I have been in Japan for close to two months now and I must say this is great ! People are nice, work is good and I haven't even begun doing all I want to do while I'm in Japan. For exemple, the cherry trees are blooming soon !

Now, concerning the apartment : Japan is a Monstrous Scam ! I sincerly hate all those damn property owner and their bloody real estates. Now, it has been said...

Let's me explain this in more minute detail. As you might be aware from my past posts on this blog, my current roommate is returning to Quebec pretty soon. The 29th of March in fact. If on this day I still haven't found an apartment, I will have no other choice but to return to the hotel or something similar. To make matters worst, I have been told by UBit that it would be better to find a place this month if I want the company to help me pay the first month's rent. I don't really understand why since it's pretty much only a loan that I will reimburse on my salary whithin 2 or 3 months. So I'm sorta in a hurry to find a place now.

So I took it upon myself to start looking for apartment even in the middle of the day during this week. I search in the afternoon and continue working late at night (till around 9pm). I planned that thinking that I would then by able to find something Tuesday or Wednesday. Sadly, this was not the case at all. Let me show you with word what usually happens when I visit places :

1. I summarize what I'm looking for (something bigger than a bread box)
2. The agent brings out the books with hundreds of apartments
3. I spend the next 30min quickly scanning through them and selecting the ones that remotly ressemble something interesting.
4. The agent now spend 30 minutes calling the owners and asking if someone like me would create panic in the area.
5. The agent now then returns with 2 or 3 apartments that I could visit.

Now, let me put this even better. If you were to take the 20 apartments from the begining and organize them in a way that you put the best one on the top and the one that are barelly worth considering at the bottom, what do you think the 2 or 3 that comes back would be ? Easy guess right ? yep, the bottom last.

Also, thursday I went to a fudousan that is supposed to specialize in finding apartment for foreigners. The afternoon didn't give much, but the agent told me she would fax me some more soon. During this time I will continue searching but I'm quite hopefull this place is going to be the right one. I sincerly hope so.

And for those that might think it is injust or even illegal. I took some time to check on the internet and confirmed that Japan does not have any law against discrimination. The only element playing for me is that Japan is part of the United Nations. According to the UN treaty, countries that are part of the treaty must implement laws against discrimination. Sadly the UN didn't check this part when Japan signed I guess.
