American Airlines : Review

Et bien voila. Je suis de retour d'un petit voyage de 11 jours au Quebec avec Aya ! J'aurais bien aimer passer plus de temps la bas mais je travail toujours a temps plein et c'est tout ce qu'il me restait de vacance.

Parce que je suis quelqu'un d'assez radin, nous avons bien chercher en janvier sur internet pour trouver les billets les moins chers possibles. Nous avons fait fort, de tous les billets Quebec-Japon que j'ai achetes, c'etait de loin les moins chers. L'allee-retour nous a coute environs 850$CND ! La condition c'est qu'on ne savait pas d'avance avec quelle compagnie aerienne nous allions voler.

Nous nous sommes ramasse avec American Airlines (pour ceux qui ont regarde le titre, ca devait etre evident...) Personnellement je ne suis pas sur que je recommanderais.

Sur les differents aspect American Airlines s'en sors plutot bien. Nous n'avons pas ete particulierement en retard, nous avons bien mange et le systeme video etait "ok". Mais de la a dire que ce fut un vol agreable, je n'irais peut-etre pas jusque la.

Par exemple, au retour notre vol devait etre : montreal-chicago, chicago-tokyo. Mais un probleme mecanique a Montreal allait nous faire manquer notre connexion alors ils nous ont redirige sur un nouveau vol : montreal-dallas, dallas-tokyo qui partait une heure plus tard que notre vol precedent. Bien que c'est heureux que nous n'ayons pas eu d'autres ennuies, je n'apprecies jamais l'idee que mon avions aient des ennuies mecaniques et le vol Montreal-Dallas etait quand meme 3h40 au lieux de 2h.

Le systeme video etait egalement assez etrange. On pouvait choisir notre film parmis une liste de peut-etre dix film recemment sorti au cinema (comme le nouveau James Bond) mais il fallait souvent attendre 10 ou 15 minutes avant de demarrer le video. L'ecran tactile etait sympatique mais le temps de reponse de l'interface me donnait l'impression d'etre dans les annees 90. Aussi, nous avions la meme selection a l'allee qu'au retour, et disons qu'en 13 heures de vol ca prend beaucoup de film pour garder quelqu'un occuper. Comparer cela a l'incroyable systeme qu'il y avait dans l'avions lorsque nous sommes alles a Taiwan en decembre c'etait plutot pathetique.

Le service etait bien mais sans plus. Surtout a l'allee, outre les deux repas principaux je ne les aient jamais vu passer pour des boissons suplementaires ou juste visite de courtoisie. Je sais bien qu'on peut toujours les appellers avec la petites sonnettes mais bon, c'est mon impression personnelle.

Finalement, je ne peux pas dire que j'ai ete decu, mais je ne peux pas dire non plus que j'ai ete impressionne. C'etait vraiment une experience moyenne. Pour le prix que nous avions paye par contre, c'etait tout a fait acceptable.

So here we are, back from a little 11 days trip to Quebec with Aya ! I would have really liked to spend more time there but I'm still a fully employed worker and that's all the vacation time I could afford.

Because I'm quite the cheapstake, we spent quite some time looking in January for the cheapest tickets we could find on the internet. We did find something incredible, cheaper than any other Quebec-Japan flight I've ever booked. We got the round-trip for $850 ! The only thing is we didn't get to choose the airline, they just announced it to us two weeks before the departure date.

So in the end (if you've read the title that's not going to be a big surprise...) we got to fly with American Airlines. I have mixed feelings about this experience.

In general it was not a bad airline. We were not especially late, we ate fairly good food and the video entertainment system was "ok". But I wouldn't say we had a "nice" flight.

For example, on the return flight we were supposed to do : Montreal-Chicago, Chicago-Tokyo. But there was some mechanical problem with the airplane in Montreal and we were afraid we would miss the connection flight so they rerouted us to a new itinerary : Montreal-Dallas, Dallas-Tokyo which left an hour later than our planned course. Hopefully there was no other incident but I can not say I really appreciate my airplanes to have "mechanical issues" just before boarding. Also, Montreal-Dallas was a 3 hours 40 minutes flight instead of the two hours for Chicago which shows when you already have a 13 hours flight ahead of you.

The video entertainment system was also a bit strange. We had personal TVs like it is common nowdays and we could choose from a selection of maybe 10 current movies (like the new James Bond) but we had to wait 10 to 15 minutes before our movie would start. The selection process could be done with the touchscreen display but the response time of the interface made me think I was back in the 90s. Also, we had the same selection on both flight and with 13 hours to do, you have time to watch quite a lot of movies. Compare this to the incredibly advanced entertainment system we had when we flew to Taiwan in December and it just feels a little pathetic.

Service was ok but not incredible. Especially on the way to Quebec, beside the two main meals I never saw them pass in the alley with snacks, additional drinks or just a simple courtesy visit. I know you can always call on them with the little button, but I still feel better when I know they're passing by from time to time, but that's just my personal opinion.

In the end, I can't say I was disappointed, considering the price it was not bad at all. But I can't really say I was impressed either. It was a really average trip. If they're prices are always that low, it might be a good airline to consider, but other than that I'd avoid it.
