TGS 2008

Des fois j'ai de la misere a croire que ca va bientot faire deux ans que je suis au Japon. Cela dit, quand je vois les memes evenements de l'annee derniere qui reviennent ca me fait realiser que j'etait bel et bien la l'an dernier.

La fin de semaine derniere c'etait le Tokyo Game Show 2008, la nouvelle version de l'evenement auquel j'ai eu la chance d'assister en 2007. J'ai ete un peu pris pars surprise, si ce n'etait de mes amis au Quebec je l'aurais manque. L'an dernier ma compagnie avait eu des billets ce qui m'avais permis de voir l'evenement pendant les journees ouvertes aux entreprises uniquement. Cette annee, pas de chance, j'ai du faire la queue comme tout le monde pendant la fin de semaine.


Apres les 45 minutes que ca m'a pris pour obtenir un billet, j'ai finalement pu proceder dans le ventre du dragon. J'ai immediatement compris les deux grosses differences entre les journees publiques et celles "entreprises" :
1. Dans les journees entreprise il y a beaucoup moins de monde.
2. Dans les journees entreprise il y a beaucoup de gens en habit veston-cravate.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas ce genre d'evenement, lors des journees ouvertes au publique il y a un grand nombre de gens deguises en personnage de jeux videos. Ca rend la scene vraiment interessante.


Mais personnellement j'ai ete plutot decu. Je trouve le cosplay vraiment amusant, mais je suis surtout interesse a essayer les nouveaux jeux mis en vedettes partout sur le plancher d'exposition. Et pendant les journees ouvertes au publique c'est la qu'il y a comme un os :







70 minutes d'attente pour essayer un jeu pendant trois ou quatre minutes ? 100 minutes d'attente pour pouvoir rentrer dans le magasin de Tokyo Marui ? J'ai vu aussi beaucoup de pancartes qui indiquaient plus de deux heures d'attente. J'ai fait la ligne pendant une heure pour essayer Saint Rows 2. C'est un peu ridicule. Et evidement, c'est les jeux les plus attendus, ceux que je voudrais vraiment essayer, qui ont les plus longues files d'attente. Je n'ai meme pas ose regarder le signe quand j'ai vu la file d'attente pour Fallout 3.

Tout ca pour dire qu'a moins que je reussisse a avoir des billets pour les journees entreprises l'annee prochaine je ne pense pas y retourner une troisieme fois. Ce n'est vraiment pas possible d'essayer quoi que ce soit. Je voudrais bien dire que juste regarder c'etait bien, mais encore une fois, beaucoup des jeux les plus anticipes sont dans des salles de montre fermees donc on ne peut meme pas voir ce qui se passe a moins de faire la file pour essayer.

Au moins il y avait le cosplay.




Sometimes I can't believe it will soon be the end of my second year in Japan. But then again, when I see the same events coming again each year it reminds me that I was there last year.

Last weekend it was the Tokyo Game Show 2008, the newest edition of the same thing I went to in 2007. I was a bit surprise when it was my friends in Quebec that reminded me of the event but I still manage to go during the weekend. Last year my company had gotten tickets for the business only days. This year however I had to do it on my own. (see first picture in the french section).

After 45 minutes in line to get the tickets I managed to step inside the belly of the beast. I immediately understood the difference between the business days and the public days :
1. Enterprise days have much less people.
2. Enterprise days have lots business suits people walking around.

For people that do not know what this kind of event implies I have to say that some of the common folks attending these kinds of events usually like to dress up as their favorite game character. This makes for a very interesting sight (See the second picture in the french section).

Even though the cosplaying was nice, the show itself was a bit of a let down. My hope when I went there was to be able to try a few of the newest games coming out and see demonstrations of the latest games and technologies. That's where the public days posed a problem. (See the two small pictures in the french section)

A 70 minutes long line to try a game for two or three minutes ? 100 minutes to get into the Tokyo Marui shop ? And these were not the worst I saw. Quite a few indicated waiting time above two hours for less than 5 minutes of tryout. I had to wait one hour for Saint Rows 2, which was one of the less crowded games. The games I would have really wanted to try were of course the one with the longest lines. I took a quick look at the line for Fallout 3 and did not even dare look at the waiting time sign.

So my conclusion is that unless I manage to score business day tickets again next year, I don't think I will be going again a third time. You cannot really try any games which would not even be that bad if I could at least see other people playing but a lot of games are played inside closed booth so you have to wait in line if you want to see it.

Still, at least there was cosplay. (see the last picture of the french section).

Australia Picture Set 02

La premiere serie de photos couvrait Cairns et Ayer's Rock. Cette partie devrait couvrir les deux autres etapes de notre voyage : Sydney et Gold Coast/Brisbane.

The first series covered Cairns and Ayer's Rock. This second set should cover the last two step in our trip : Sydney and Gold Coast/Brisbane.



On se prelassait langoureusement sur le bord de l'eau a Sydney, comtemplant le fameux "Harbour Bridge" quand j'ai realise.... Il y a du monde qui escalade le pont !

In Sydney, we were walking languorously along the water, looking at the famous "Harbour Bridge" when I realised.... There's people climbing it !



Preuve que je suis bel et bien aller a l'opera de Sydney. Domage que c'etait nuageux, blanc sur fond blanc c'est moyen.

Autant que je sache, une des rare choses qui ne soit pas mortellement dangeureux en Australie ce sont les lezards. Il sont pas mal gros, mais fort sympatique. A Gold Coast j'ai meme vu un jeune adolescent en capturer un. Avec la queue (du lezard) les deux avait a peu pres la meme taille.

As far as I know, lizards in Australia are probably the only things that are not mortally dangerous. There pretty big, but really nice. In Gold Coast we even saw a young teenager catching a pretty big one. With it's tail the lizard was nearly the same size as the kid.



Les caves de Jenolan. Cette photo a ete prise dans la salle avec une accoustique incroyable. Si vous avez de bons yeux, l'echelle que vous voyez c'est pour aller changer le systeme de son cache dans un des petits creux du plafond.

In the blue mountains we went to see the Jenolan caves. The room where this picture was taken has a near perfect acoustic. If your eyes are really good, the ladder you can see is to change the sound system up in the ceiling.

Particulierement fier d'avoir reussit a me lever a 4h30 du matin pour voir le lever du soleil sur l'ocean. Mon voyage n'aurait pas ete complet sans.

I'm very happy I managed to will myself to wake up one morning at 4h30 just to see the sunrise on the sea. My trip would not have been complete without it.

Australia Picture Set 01

Plusieurs personnes ont probablement vu la version etendu de mes photos sur flickr. Mais comme l'histoire est sur mon blog, je me suis dit que je passerais quelques commentaires sur certaines photos.

Sorry guys (and girls...), I'm not sure I'm going to take the time to translate the whole trip to Australia in english. I just don't have that kind of time. But rejoice, at least I'm going to try to comment the pictures both language !



Au zoo la premiere journee nous avons pu voir plusieurs representant de l'incroyable diversite d'oiseau que l'on retrouve en Australie. Certaines especes sont vraiment etranges.

The first day we went to the zoo and we were able to see up close some of the more weird species of birds inhabiting Australia. There such a incredible amount of bird species in Australia it's incredible.




Au zoo il y a eu un spectacle de voltige avec plusieurs especes d'oiseau. Je suis particulierement fier d'avoir pu prendre une photo d'aussi pres et que la photo soit sortie aussi bien !

At the zoo there was a bird show with various species. I'm really proud of this picture. It came out really good for such a close shot in midair !




Je n'ai pas de vraiment bonne photo de la foret tropicale en banlieue de Cairns. C'est dommage parce que c'etait vraiment impressionnant.

I don't have such a good picture of the tropical forest just outside of Cairns. It's too bad because it was very impressive.




Le desert et le ciel bleue parfait de Ayer's Rock. Ce que vous voyez dans le coin c'est une des maudites mouches omnipresente qui a passe devant l'objectif dans le un millieme de seconde d'exposition que ca a pris pour immortaliser l'image. Je jure que ce n'est pas un montage !
