いろは坂 (Irohazaka)

La fin de semaine ayant ete chargee, ce poste risque d'etre un des plus long roman publie par votre humble serviteur (le tout agremente de photos en plus !) J'ai en effet ete sur un sympatique "road trip" en compagnie de la seule japonaise pour l'instant qui laisse des commentaires sur mon blog (il vous sera, j'en suis certain, fort aise d'identifier l'individu mentionne). Nous sommes alles visite Nikko (日光) ce dimanche.

Mais tout d'abord, laissez moi me complaire dans une debauche tout a fait "nerd". Lorsque nous nous sommes mis en route, j'ignorais que Nikko etait tout a cote de la route de montagne appellee Irohazaka. Ceux qui ne connaissent rien aux Mangas, Animes ou autres piteries d'Otaku peuvent des maintenant sauter le paragraphe qui suit.

Irohazaka se trouve a etre la demeure des infames "Team Emperor" dans le manga/anime/film/jeu intitule "Initial D" !!! C'est un des mangas que j'apprecie le plus. C'est l'histoire d'un groupe de jeunes qui font des courses de voiture dans les routes montagneuses du japon, le genre de route qui n'existe pas au Quebec ! Dimanche j'aurais donne bien cher pour avoir mon permis de conduire encore en ma possession parce que nous avons fait non seulement la route en montant mais aussi en descendant ! C'est ecoeurant comme route !! Evidement, a cinq personnes dans une petite voiture en plein milieu du trafic, il n'etait meme pas question de conduite sportive ou autres stupidites du genre, juste le simple fait de descendre une route comme celle la, wow ! Initial D a aussi un jeu d'arcade (du meme nom) auquel j'ai joue plus d'une fois. Evidement, dans le jeu, toutes les pistes bien connues qui apparaissent dans le manga sont presentes, dont Irohazaka. C'etait d'autant plus etrange que, meme si c'etait la premiere fois que je prennais cette route, je connaissais les virages ! Le jeu est vraiment bien rendu (la physique n'est pas realiste, mais les pistes sont, je m'en rend compte, tres fiable !) Ais-je besoin de mentionner que j'etait le seul dans la voiture a etre excite par une simple route, ah la la...

Bon, revenons aux choses serieuses. Il y a plein de choses a voir a Nikko, donc un ou deux endroits faisant parti du patrimoine historique mondial.

Nous avons egalement admire une des trois plus belles chutes du Japon (au Japon tout vient par groupe de trois, je crois qu'il y a en fait une raison religieuse pour ca...) : Kegon Taki (華厳滝) (Certains d'entre vous connaissent sans doute ma propension a prendre un nombre incalculable de photos de tout ce qui est liquide, j'aurais pu passer ma journee sur cette chute...)

Je tiens a remercier notre guide touristique et organisatrice Keiko (celle mentionne plus haut qui laisse des commentaires sur mon blog). Tous les liens pour les differents endroits que nous avons visites viennent d'elle.

Comme on m'avait dit, les voyages en voiture au Japon coutent cher. Une simple journee de route et de tourisme m'a coute plus de 100$. En fait, juste en essence, frais d'autoroute et stationnement, a cinq nous avons chacun debourse 7500 Yen (75$ !). Ensuite c'etait 1 050 Yen pour Rinno-Ji, 550 Yen pour Tosho-gu (ou vice-versa) et un autre 500 Yen pour l'ascenseur qui t'amene au pied de la chute Kegon (oui oui, un ascenseur !). Mais vous ne m'entendrez pas dire que cela ne valait pas la peine, chaque seconde valait son pesant d'or ! Contempler l'architecture Japonaise est vraiment fascinant, le paysage est magnifique (ca fait changement des gratte-ciel de Tokyo) et les gens avec qui j'etait sont tous forts sympatiques. Je ne crois pas avoir reussit a suivre une seule des conversations en Japonais, mais c'etait une foutu de bonne pratique et j'espere avoir d'autres occasions comme celle la, je suis sur que mon japonais va en prendre de la graine !

Dans un tout autre ordre d'idee, quelqu'un au bureau m'a dit que mon blog, pendant une journee, a ete le site referencant le plus celui de Ubit !! (shameless plug de nouveau donc.)

Descendez apres la portion anglophone pour les photos et leurs descriptions. Les photos de Nikko sont egalement publiques sur Flickr, ce qui veut dire que, tout comme la carte de mon appartement, vous pouvez clicker sur la photo pour avoir un plus grand apercu. I had a fairly eventfull weekend so this post might be the longest and wordiest one in the history of this blog (and this is coming with pictures too !). All this because I actually had the pleasure of going on a road trip with the only japanese friend I have that has actually left comment on this blog to date (I believe this shall serve as enough indication to identify without fail the person in question). We (as in : five of us) went to Nikko (日光) this Sunday.

But first, let me penetrate in the more geeky part of my personnality and expose a little bit of fandom. When we began our trip I did not know that Nikko was accessed by a mountain road called Irohazaka. Those that know nothing of Mangas, Anime and other patethic excuses of those commonly refered to as Otaku may now skip to the next paragraph and begin reading anew.

Irohazaka is the home turf of the infamous "Team Emperor" in the absolutely famous Manga/Anime/Movie/Game called "Initial D" !!! This is one of my all-time favorite manga. It's the story of a group of young drivers racing each other in the winding mountain passes of Japan. The kind of road we just don't have in Quebec ! Sunday I would have given many things to yet be in possession of my canadian driving license so that I could be the one driving up and down the mountain. Still, I was running shotgun, so I guess this is the second best thing that I could have hoped for ! This a very very fun road ! Of course, we were five people, in a small car, in the middle of the daily traffic, so there was absolutly nothing even remotly ressembling agressive or otherwise stupid driving, but it was still so much fun ! Initial D is also an arcade game which I have played quite a few time. Of course, in this game, all the most famous trac from the manga are present, so is Irohazaka. It was so strange to be there for the first time but actually know the corners quite well (the physic of the game is at best arcade style, but the trac layout are dead on). Of course, as with any geek stuff, I was the only one in the car to be so excited by such a simple thing as a road, oh well...

Ok, this is where the general reader can get back on track. There are many good places to see in Nikko, as well as one or two world heritage.

We also saw one of the three most beautifull fall in Japan (Everything in Japan comes in package of three, I believe there is some religious explanation about that...) : Kegon Taki (華厳滝) (Some of you might know that I have a certain predisposition when it comes to taking pictures of running water, so yes, I do have many pictures of the fall.)

I must also thanks our tour organizer and guide Keiko (which I mentionned earlier as the only one leaving comments in japanese on this blog). All the above links comes from her, so thank you very much !

I had been told that car trip in Japan can amount to quite a bit of money, this is indeed true. Our simple journey as cost me a little more than 100$. In fact, just the fuel, highway toll and parking costed to each of us 7 500 Yen (75$ !). Then visiting temple cost money, 1 050 Yen for Rinno-Ji, 550 Yen for Tosho-gu (or the other way around, not sure) and another 500 Yen for the elevator going to the fall (yes, an elevator !). But I'm not complaining, this trip was worth every penny ! The japanese architecture is always breathtaking, the countryside is beautifull and the nature is a relaxing change from Tokyo's everyday skyscrappers. The people I was with also helped making this a very nice trip. I don't think I was able to follow any of the many conversations that happened in japanese, but it was the best practice I could hope for and I'm sure a couple more of these and my japanese is going to get a good boost.

On a completly different subject, someone at work told me that this blog, for one day, was the top referer for my company's website (Ubit) (another shameless plug then !).

And here I'll try to post some of the pictures I took during my trip to Nikko.
